Respite care provides a temporary break for family members or in-home caregivers by allowing seniors to have a short-term stay in a community that can meet their care needs. Many assisted living communities, adult family homes, and nursing homes have respite care programs. Residents typically stay from a week to a month, depending on their situation. They receive all the services of the community. Respite stays may also serve as a trial period for the senior to get acquainted with the community; many residents find that they enjoy their stay and decide to move in following their short-term visit. Respite programs are available for assisted living and Alzheimer’s residents.
